Personal Notes on Bahram:
Bahram grew up in a small mountain town of Iran. He had a deep love of family and physical fitness. While in medical school in Tehran, he played discus and swam for the Iranian Olympic team. He gave up his aspiration of going to the Olympics to attend university in Paris. His love for discus and swimming continued till his late 80’s. He enjoyed taking care of his 56 acre farm in Cockeysville, MD. He enjoyed traveling with Pari all around the world exploring and swimming!
Here are some excerpts from his memoirs:
“We are the descendants of the ZAND family. They were mountain men living in the west of Iran. Karim Khan Zand the head of the tribe was the King (Shah of Iran) before the QAJAR dynasty. Most of the Zand family moved to a small village near Asak. The village Tafresh is located in a mountain area to lie safe from the QAJAR kings.
“My father (Abdollah) was born in Tafresh in 1886. He studied Farsi’s literature and the Arabic language. He migrated to Tehran, the capital of Iran. He was employed as a clerk in the foreign ministry. A few years later he went to medical school and immediately was employed by the Iranian army with the rank of Soltan (Captain).
“My father, Abdollah had two offices in the town of Broogherd. He trained his wife Fatema Sina to be a midwife. I was destined to become a physician.
“Interestingly, during the reign of the Pahlavi dynasty, my father Abdollah had to choose a last name. He came from the clan Zand. His wife Fatema came from the clan Sina. It is said that the Sina clan goes back to Avicenna, so with a deep heart for medicine, he chose his wife’s clan name.
“I was born in Kashan on May 28, 1928. Dr. Abdollah Sina at the age of 20 married Fatem, who was 14 years old. She became pregnant 12 times and delivered 12 babies. 6 of my siblings died from gastroenteritis (diarrhea) or other infectious diseases. I recall the death of my brother Abbas at the age of 7. I was only 5 years old at the time of this great tragedy in our family. She had 5 sons; Mohammad Ali, Hussein, Hassan, Hushan, Bahram and a daughter Mahine.
“I am Bahram and the youngest of male children. My sister Mahine was 2 years younger than I. Unfortunately, my siblings are all deceased. I lost my sister 2 years ago. I lost my brother Hassan last year at the age of 96. Since his death I feel alone.”
- Bless you, Daddy. Now you are all reunited.

I am so grateful to Dr. Bahram Sina. I have known his daughter Shaida since 1996. She has also spoken of her family and father with love and respect. I enjoyed and still continue to enjoy listening to the stories that she shares about growing up and his dedication to medicine and family! Shaida shares many of these qualities of her father’s dedication and discipline. You will be remembered and continue to inspire those whose lives you have touched! RIP Bahram
Dr. Sina was a quintessential physician and gentleman. He was an excellent role model for his residents and colleagues, and could be counted on to enliven the discussions at Dermatology Grand Rounds and at the Maryland Dermatology Society meetings! I was blessed to have known him.
Loving uncle and a true man of integrity and honesty. Missed by all those who knew him…
It is never easy to say goodbye to someone who has been a great mentor and truly a loving person who had touched me with his love and caring heart.
I have so many memories to treasure and memories that I will be missing – going out together for dinner, cooking together your favorite Persian rice, watching together your favorite movies.
Dr. Sina dedicated his life to his family and medicine making sure we were supported in our endeavors and that we were truly loved. You will be my all time favorite hero Baba. Thank you for accepting me to be part of the family even for a while. May your heart rest in peace and your soul find a comfort. Be happy there with Mommany ?. You will always stay in my heart.
Dr. Sina was a source of wisdom and guidance for me from the earliest days of my residency training at Maryland. And he was such a colorful character! I remember him in his eighties, telling me with his usual sparkling enthusiasm how he still loved climbing and pruning his peach trees. Can you imagine? I will miss him… Though he closed his private office about the time I went into private practice, he gave me his Grenz Ray machine and his office exam table and cabinet; I still use the table and cabinet to this day.
I remember Dr. Sina when I was a medical student at Univ of Maryland during my Dermatology elective. As an active member of the Maryland Dermatologic Society- I always enjoyed his commentary on difficult cases. Very pleasant man with a great spirit! -Dakara Rucker Wright, MD.
Dr. Sina – you truly were one-of-a-kind and added so much “spice” to The University of Maryland Department of Dermatology and at the Maryland Dermatology Society meetings. I miss your wisdom and your lovely voice.
